Levi Vargas, a dedicated Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy, tragically passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026, while participating in the annual 120-mile Baker to Vegas relay race.
Vargas, 30, was part of the law enforcement team running through the grueling Mojave Desert when he suffered a medical emergency. Despite immediate efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after. The race, known for its extreme conditions, starts in Baker and stretches across the harsh terrain all the way to Las Vegas.
Having served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for over 11 years, Vargas was deeply respected by his colleagues. He began his career as a custody assistant before becoming a deputy in 2015. His professionalism, commitment, and compassion left a lasting impact on those around him.
In a statement, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department expressed their devastation, calling his loss “deeply felt across the department.” Colleagues shared their sorrow, with one commenting, “He was the kind of person who made everyone around him better.”
