Stacie Ellis Mason, a cherished member of the Vero Beach community, tragically lost her life on March 24, 2026, in a double homicide near the Indian River County Public Library. The heartbreaking incident also claimed the life of Danny Ooley.
Mason, 42, and Ooley, both employed by Indian River County, were found fatally shot inside Ooley's vehicle around 7 a.m. on that Tuesday. Investigators believe the crime stemmed from a deeply personal conflict, as Mason and Ooley were reportedly in a romantic relationship while Mason was in the midst of a troubled marriage to Jesse Ellis.
The shooting has shaken the local community. Vero Beach Police Chief David Currey described the event as a "crime of passion," adding that the situation was compounded by the couple’s possible impending separation.
