Durham Community Mourns the Loss of Local Artist Tevin Burney Following Late-Night Incident on North Roxboro Street

Tevin Burney, a 23-year-old local artist widely known as “YBT,” passed away on March 17, 2026, after a late-night incident near North Roxboro Street in Durham, North Carolina.

Authorities responded just before midnight to the 3500 block near Regency Place Apartments, where they found three individuals inside a vehicle suffering from critical injuries.

Tevin Burney and another Durham resident, 26-year-old Jarrett Godfrey, were pronounced deceased at the scene, while a woman received treatment at a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Burney had built a strong presence in Durham’s music community as part of the rap collective 83 Babies, gaining recognition for a distinct style and loyal following.

News of the passing spread quickly, prompting an outpouring of tributes across social media.

One community member shared, “Your music and energy will never be forgotten,” while another wrote, “Sending love and prayers to everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.”
