Zakar Jeffrey Tragically Passes Away Following Police Shooting in Des Moines, Iowa
Zakar Jeffrey, 33, tragically lost his life on March 24, 2026, following a police shooting during a welfare check at the Flats on 5th apartment complex in Des Moines, Iowa.
The incident unfolded after a call from Jeffrey's father, who was concerned about the well-being of his adult daughter and her boyfriend. When officers arrived and knocked on the door, apartment management unlocked it to allow them inside. Once inside, Jeffrey, armed with a knife, allegedly tried to attack his father and then charged at police. In response, Senior Officer Noah DeVenney, who has been with the Des Moines Police Department since 2024, fired his weapon, fatally wounding Jeffrey. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, Jeffrey was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a separate part of the apartment, officers discovered 33-year-old Martasha Jordane Paris McKenzie deceased in a bedroom. Her death is being investigated as a homicide by the Des Moines Police Department.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is currently reviewing the use of force by Officer DeVenney, who has been placed on administrative assignment. Body-worn camera footage from the incident is under review as well.
A memorial service for Jeffrey will be announced by the family soon.
